It was really scary to see progressive journalists take for granted the classic Tough On Crime Republican Asshole argument that advocating for leniency means condoning (if not also being guilty of) those same crimes.
we were talking about this somewhere recently (probably bluesky?). i still have a hard time understanding how ostensibly serious people who i know mistrust prisons -- some of whom i respect a lot -- came for these letters with knives out.
