There’s this little piece of Hollywood gossip that before he took a shot at acting, the guy who was then known as Tommy Mapother spent a year or two at St. Francis Seminary in Cincinnati. An old seminary buddy says “Tommy’s” interest in becoming a priest was sincere, and there are different stories about why it didn’t come to fruition. Seminary officials say Tommy dropped out; others remember it differently.
Either way, it’s not that hard to imagine, is it? A thousand-watt bulb of pure charisma with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, an unwavering work ethic and a, shall we say, interest in a higher power. Tommy Mapother would have been a dangerously good priest. Instead he became Tom Cruise. A whole different kind of dangerous.
